Economic growth is a development imperative for India—but India's citizens are also exposed to high risks from climate instability. Therefore, India’s climate targets under its updated Nationally Determined Contribution call for a 45 percent decrease in GDP emissions intensity. Can market-based mechanisms assist in achieving this goal? This Infosys Prize Lecture by 2022 Social Sciences laureate economist Prof. Rohini Pande of Yale University will cover the development and impact of India's world first particulate-matter pollution market in Gujarat, and lessons from this work that may impact future Indian carbon markets.
