Powerful sections of the political, intellectual and industrial leadership in India understood Science and the State as universals in World History, and India, they were convinced, had to confirm its place in history as an equal among equals. A gradual assembly of material infrastructure to realistically enable the new country to make capable decisions on critical questions called on science education and research to step up to the occasion.
In this Infosys Prize lecture, Dr. Phalkey will talk about her research in the histories of nuclear research, statistics and aeronautics. She will explore the claim that state-formation and knowledge-making were inextricably intertwined in the middle decades of the twentieth century.
