The cities we live in may not have large charismatic mammals or endangered endemic species, but that does not mean that our cities are devoid of nature. Different kinds of ecosystems from small ponds to wetlands that cover acres, from a single tree to an avenue, or from a manicured park to a wooded grove all constitute urban nature—as do the biodiversity they support from insects to mammals. What is fascinating about urban nature is its close connections with society—the sacred, cultural, economic and subsistence importance of nature that are indicative of the coexistence of humans and nature even in the most crowded cities. This talk will discuss the different kinds of nature and biodiversity that exists in our cities, focusing especially on the enduring and evolving relationships that city residents have had with nature around them.
