Event
Seeking to address a perceived gap in high quality science outreach in India, especially in mathematics, Bhāvanā, a mathematical magazine, began as a humble initiative ten years ago, in 2017. The founding doctrine was kept disarmingly simple -- make the dissemination of mathematical ideas insightful, enjoyable, and relatable. Specifically, to convey the essential unity of mathematics which dissolves any distinction between the pure and the applied.
Consciously eschewing theorems and proofs, Bhāvanā has striven to seek a middle ground, striking a balance between a historian's emphasis on purely personal journeys, versus a mathematician's impersonal and laser sharp focus solely on the nitty-gritty. This balance also seamlessly segues Bhāvanā into another of its strong focus areas, which is to explore through primary sources the millennia-long legacy of mathematical thought emerging from within the Indic milieu.
The commonly used Sanskrit word Bhāvanā, that the magazine title carries, is the name the seventh century mathematician Brahmagupta’s commentators gave to his law of composition.
